High winds on Friday evening ripped through the village of Aishalton, South Rupununi, Region Nine, damaging eight homes and leaving families seeking shelter.

The Director General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Nazrul Hussain, told the Sunday Stabroek yesterday that he was unable to say how many families were affected by the high wind on Friday evening, however, an assessment is currently being done by CDC personnel.

He noted that families including children were affected but no injuries were reported and the affected families are currently seeking shelter with others.

Hussain said that the CDC is collaborating with the regional authorities and they are taking tarpaulins and food supplies for affected residents.

Back on June 30, a similar incident occurred where approximately six families were displaced as a 30-minute storm completely destroyed their homes. A teenage boy was injured after the walls of his bedroom came crashing down on him during the violent storm.
