Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn yesterday handed over several new vehicles and bicycles to the Guyana Fire Service.

A release from the ministry said that the items were purchased by the Government of Guyana at a total cost of $81.8 million.

The vehicles include two excavators, which will remain in Region 4 to assist in the planting of fire hydrants and to support firefighting efforts; three double cab pickups, which will be placed in Regions 2, 4, and 6; one SUV, which will be used to transport the Chief Fire Officer and other senior officers; and one motorcycle, which will be sent to Lethem, Region 9.

Five bicycles were also included in the purchase, which will be distributed to each division.

In a stern address to the ranks, the minister charged them to take their positions seriously and told officers that they should lead by example.

Meanwhile, Fire Chief Gregory Wickham thanked the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Government of Guyana for their continuous support and committed that the vehicles would be used in an efficient way to enhance firefighting efforts.
