Nigerian charged with attempted murder at State House

Bethel Chimezie, the perpetrator of the attack at State House last month was today charged with attempted murder  and remanded to prison.

Chimezie, 25, a labourer of Industry, East Coast Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 1.

He was recently discharged from the hospital.

He was charged with attempting to murder Police Corporal Telon Perreira.

The Nigerian national was also charged with discharging a loaded firearm with intent to harm police Constable Quacy Cummings.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charges and was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned to January 26.

Chimezie was injured during the attack he launched outside of State House around 7.30 am on December 15 at the Carmichael Street entrance. He had been held incommunicado since then.

Before he was wounded, Chimezie demanded to see President Irfaan Ali, stabbed Perreira five times and seized a gun from another guard. He then engaged in a shootout with guards.

The police said that the attempted murder charge was laid under section 103(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

Chimezie was also charged with Discharging a loaded firearm with intent, contrary to section 55 (a ) of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01.
