Bethel Chimezie, the Nigerian national who launched an attack at State House in Georgetown on 15th December 2022, was sentenced yesterday to three months imprisonment together with three years of supervised probation on the count of discharging a loaded firearm with intent.

Chimezie was arrested by Assistant Superintendent Rodwell Sarrabo on 16th January 2023 for the offence committed on Quincy Cummings, at State House, Carmichael Street, Georgetown.

He was charged on 19th January 2023. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan, where he was not required to plead. Bail was refused.

Yesterday, the police said that the defendant pleaded guilty before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court (#2). He was sentenced to three months imprisonment together with three years probation supervision.

The police said that the court started the maximum sentencing guideline at fifteen months and took into consideration the time Chimezie spent on remand. Vernette Pindar-Whittaker prosecuted the matter.

Chimezie is still facing the charge of the attempted murder of Police Corporal Telon Perreira.

Chimezie was injured during the attack he launched outside of State House around 7.30 am on December 15 at the Carmichael Street entrance.

Before he was wounded, Chimezie demanded to see President Irfaan Ali, allegedly stabbed Perreira five times and seized a gun from another guard. He then engaged in a shootout with guards.
