Sheppherd elected DVA president

The Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) recently held elections and national player, Kristoff Sheppherd, will lead the body for the next year.

Sheppherd was unanimously elected and said that he is “committed to serve.”

Sheppherd’s executive will see Lennox Shuman serving as vice-president and Andre Jagnandan as general secretary. Nicholas Khan is the treasurer while Allan Bose is the body’s Public Relations Officer.

Following the elections, the body held its first general meeting where plans were laid out plans for the 2023 season. Members for the various committees were also appointed.

The competitions committee comprises Quacy Matheson, Alicia Davis and Grantley Muntor while Bose will be joined by Lerone Souvenir on the Public Relations Committee. The technical committee will feature Dester Hoppie, Marlon Pearson, Creston Rodney, Juan Velasquez and Mercedes Matheson.

Nick Khan, Souvenir and Matheson are the members of the finance committee while Pearson and Davis forms the women’s development committee.

The selection committee features Hoppie, Devendra Samaroo, Keneria Bollard, Marlon Pearson and Sheppherd. According to the DVA, the senior male and female teams will be selected “very soon.”   Samaroo has been appointed head coach and Hoppie assistant coach. Hoppie will also be the head coach of the senior female team.

Keneria Bollard is the beach volleyball head coach as well as the senior female assistant coach. Alicia Davis and Vance Harding are the youth head coach and assistant respectively.

The body also released its selection criteria which notes the requirements for the men’s team.

The body indicated the height requirements for an outside hitter should be at least five feet 10 inches, middle blocker (at least six feet, three inches), opposite hitter (at least six feet, one inch), setter (at least five feet eight inches) and Libero (at least five feet four inches).

The requirements for the vertical jump are at least 10 feet, four inches for outside hitter, at least 11 feet and three inches for middle blocker, at least 10 feet and nine inches for an opposite hitter and at least 10 feet and four inches for a setter.

Additionally, all potential members of the team will be required to complete a yo-yo fitness test with a passing score of 16 as well as complete a fitness circuit upon the direction and availability of the head coach.
