An excavator working in Kingston today caused blackouts across the city after it came into contact with a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) distribution feeder.

GPL in a statement said that “Following reports of a loud explosion, an excavator was found carrying out work at the corner of Cowan and High Streets, Kingston, Georgetown.

“The excavator came into contact with one of our main distribution feeders at the Kingston Power Plant, disrupting service to customers in Demerara and Berbice.

“Once again, we implore contractors to contact GPL before executing work in close proximity to our network.  Power restoration is underway”.

The excavator was being operated by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, according to a post on the Facebook page of Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar.
