I am writing to express my frustration at the ongoing construction of the ‘B’ Field Blacka Bridge that has been causing major traffic congestion in Sophia, the Eastern Highway and its environs. I’d like to give you a more highlighted background as to what transpires on a daily basis since the commencement of this project.
Mornings are chaotic because it’s the rush hour for workers, school children and other road users but what is even worse is the afternoon peak hours. On the afternoon of February 14th I was heading into Sophia so I used the Dennis Street entrance from the head of Sheriff Street. I turned onto Dennis Street at approximately 5:15pm and was met with a very long line of traffic; now I know its afternoon and everyone is heading home, so I thought this shouldn’t take too long because we will at least move at a reasonable enough pace, but that was not the case at all. I was in that line for one hour straight and the traffic was not moving at all! Not even an inch, now I got out the vehicle to see what was really going on and why this buildup of traffic wasn’t moving, and all I saw was a pile up of vehicles from all four sections at the intersection of Dennis Street and the Eastern Highway.
It was so infuriating because you literally could not turn off to reroute to anywhere and they were no Police presence in sight! Everyone was trying to bore and move at once and it could not happen because there were no order and so we were stuck; now I got on my phone and dial 911 to get a number for the Turkeyen Police Station to inform them of the situation. I am sure they were already aware of and to have them send an officer to help control the flow of traffic but when I called Turkeyen Station I was placed on hold for about 10 minutes and I hung up because for one, I was on my cellphone and two, I was tired and already upset about the whole situation.
To make matters even worse than it already was two drivers started to argue and that escalated quickly to the point where a fight ensued, lucky for us they was an off duty officer in that same line and he proceeded to the front and he brought that situation under control and he then assisted with the traffic disaster that we were stuck in. Now I am thankful that he did what he did and I was able to reach my destination, even though it was well after 7pm but questions still remain as to why with him being an Officer of the Law didn’t come out of his vehicle sooner to assist with this ridiculous situation even though he was off duty and why is it that no Traffic Police was present there at that rush hour?.
I trust that this letter reaches the attention of the relevant authorities and this situation is remedied soonest for myself and all other road users.
