Five hundred cops graduate from gender-based violence training

On Friday, 500 ranks from the Guyana Police Force graduated from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s CopSquad2000 Initiative, in collaboration with the United Nations and the European Union through the Spotlight Initiative, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Guyana Police Force.

A release from the Ministry of Human Services said that the police ranks completed special training that equipped them with the necessary procedures and practices to handle Domestic and Gender-Based Violence reports at police stations nationwide.

These ranks will carry badges that indicate their special training for these situations.

Dr Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Security said in her remarks, “this is the kind of collaboration that ensures that our country can progress to the heights it needs to…in a way that every citizen across the length and breadth of Guyana feels safe.”

The graduation ceremony was held at the National Cultural Centre with the Minister of Home Affairs  Robeson Benn reminding the ranks that they are the peacekeepers of the nation and they should act in that manner, a release from the Guyana Police Force said.

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, in his brief remarks said that ranks must at all times maintain their professionalism and provide quality service to members of the communities which they are Policing.

Persaud said that her Ministry has made a commitment to ensure that every rank in the Guyana Police Force is trained on Gender-Based Violence and Domestic Violence.

Also present were UN Resident Coordinator Yesim Oruc, EU Deputy Ambassador Evelina Melbarzde and senior members of the police force.
