A rice farmer of Maria’s Delight, Essequibo Coast was placed before the court and fined after he was involved in a hit-and run accident with a pedestrian on the Essequibo Coast Public Road.

A police release stated that the rice farmer, 46-year-old Allan Baharall of Charity Extension Scheme, on Tuesday around 18.00 hours on New Road Public Road Essequibo Coast, was riding his motorcycle, CL 2933 heading south at a fast rate when he struck a pedestrian, 59-year-old Jeewan Etawroo, a labourer of Lot 38 New Road Public Road Essequibo Coast. At the time of the accident Etwaroo was reportedly standing at the side of the road.

According to police, the motorcyclist claimed that Etwaroo suddenly walked across the road and into his path.

As a result of the collision the pedestrian sustained multiple injuries about his body. The motorcyclist fled the scene without rendering any assistance to the pedestrian.

Etwaroo was picked up in an unconscious state and was rushed to the Charity Public Hospital where he was examined and then transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital suffering from a broken right leg and lacerations about the body.

Acting on information received, the police visited Baharall at an address in Charity Extension Scheme. He was arrested and taken, along with his motorcycle, to the Charity Police Station where he was placed in custody and the motorcycle was lodged to be examined by a licensing and Certifying Officer.

A Breathalyzer test was conducted on Baharall and he was found to be under the legal limit.

On Wednesday, Baharall appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Christel Lambert to answer to the charges of failing to render assistance to an injured person; failing to stop after an accident; being an unlicensed driver, and breach of insurance. He was fined the sums of$30,000 or three months imprisonment, $20,000 or two weeks imprisonment, $30,000 or two months imprisonment, and $40,000 or six months imprisonment, respectively.
