Munroe, Singh to contest GOA Presidency

The calendar has flipped to March and the names of the candidates scheduled to contest the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) all important electoral AGM in 12 days have been revealed to this publication.

According to a source within the GOA, who spoke on the condition of anonymity yesterday, President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, Godfrey Munroe and President of the Guyana Baseball League Inc., Robin Singh, are the candidates vying for the top post on March 14.

The presidency of the GOA, is currently held by Kalam Juman-Yassin, 76, who has been at the helm for the better part of three decades.

Singh and Munroe, who is one of the three current Vice Presidents of the body, are both seeking to take over the reign of one of the most important sports institutions in Guyana.

The source then disclosed that President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle along with Philip Fernandes, decorated athlete and four-time Olympian, Aliann Pompey and Cristy Campbell have all been nominated to fill the three seats of the Vice Presidents position currently occupied by Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Monroe and Charles Corbin.

Fernandes heads the Guyana Hockey Board, while Campbell is at the helm of the Guyana Tennis Association.

Ninvalle, is the president of the Guyana Boxing Association while Fernandes and Campbell are both commissioners on the National Sports Commission. 

The source further disclosed that Dr. Pilgrim, and Attorneys-at-Law, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon (President of Archery Guyana) and Keavon Bess (President of the Bodybuilding Federation) are the names thrown into the hat for the post of Secretary General.

Deion Nurse, Emelia Randhani and Latoya Herbert are the nominees for Assistant Secretary General, while current Treasurer of the body, Garfield Wiltshire is the only nominee for that position.

Ramdhani and Nurse were also nominated for the position of Assistant Treasurer, along with Michael Singh.

The GOA’s umbrella bodies will soon determine in large part the direction sports locally will undertake for next few years and beyond as electoral elections of the GOA is just in 12 days.
