Gauze removed from mother two months after C-Section birth at Suddie Hospital

Twenty-five-year-old Sussana Philmattie of Cullen Region Two is still in severe pain after a pack of gauze was removed by doctors two months after she gave birth to her first child via Caesarean Section at the Suddie Public Hospital.

The woman after giving birth to her first child continued to experience excruciating pain and swelling in her stomach.  She said she knew something was wrong and had an ultrasound done which revealed that something abnormal was inside.

Speaking to Stabroek News, the woman recalled she was admitted to the Suddie Public Hospital on December,12,2022 where she delivered a baby girl. She said that she had to undergo a C- Section.

The mother said that after she was discharged from the hospital she experienced continuous pain and the left of her stomach remained swollen.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was my first child and I just wanted to ensure that things went well but then the pain continued and I went back to the hospital and the doctors just told me to use antibiotics. I knew something wasn’t right” the young mother related.

She said that in January she returned to the hospital and then decided to conduct the ultrasound at a private hospital nearby. The mother continued that her stomach continued to swell and in frustration travelled to Georgetown to consult with a doctor at the Woodlands Hospital. It was there she was informed that there was something inside her stomach. Another ultrasound was conducted and as a result the mother was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where an emergency operation was performed and the gauze was removed. She was hospitalised for six days after the emergency surgery.

“I am happy to be alive but I hope that no one else suffers such, the pain is unbearable and I still have it. It’s a good thing that it didn’t form a septic in me and worst case I am so traumatized over this” the mother related.

When contact was made to a senior official at the Suddie Public Hospital related that they are aware of the issue which is being investigated by a high level management team.
