Gauze incident reminds me of a similar occurrence at the said hospital some years ago

Dear Editor,

The article with the gauze left inside a woman following a caesarean section at the Suddie Public Hospital reminds me of a similar incident that occurred at the said hospital some years ago. I was informed of the incident and went to the young mother’s house. The young woman, I recalled, was very careful but yet afraid to relate her story even though she was in pain and discomfort.  If my memory serves me right it was a scissors that was lodged inside of her after she had undergone a surgery.

Editor, the Suddie Public Hospital is the main hospital on the Essequibo Coast. It serves residents from as far as Region One whenever the need arises. Over the years, there were a lot of young, new doctors at this facility. Most of them would have done their studies in Cuba and then when they returned would have done their internship at the hospital.  Editor, like I said it is one of our main hospital because not everyone can afford to travel to the City for medical care.

I hope a thorough investigation is done and those responsible would in the future be extra careful.  A team works in the operating theater and everyone should be vigilant.

Sincerely,

Yannason Duncan
