Edward Sukhu, the man who allegedly threw a lit kerosene stove on his reputed wife during a dispute over a cellphone has since been remanded to prison after he was charged with attempted murder.

It was said that the 47-year-old Sukhu also called “Paul”, an operator of Lot 63 ‘A’, No. 69 Village Corentyne, Berbice had made his appearance on February 24th at the No. 51 Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh who read the charge to him.

The man was not required to plead to the indictable offence which alleged that he attempted to murder 40-year-old Zeena Harripaul also known as “Lovita” at their home on February 15th. Bail was then refused and the man was remanded to the prison.

Sukhu is expected to make his second appearance on March 27th when the matter is expected to be called again.

Stabroek News had previously reported that at about 7pm on February 15th the couple was involved in an argument over the cellphone and according to the Police, Sukhu was at the time under the influence of alcohol while Harripaul was cooking on a kerosene stove in the kitchen which is located on the lower flat of their house.

They said that the couple’s son, Joshua Sukhu, 20, who is a construction worker had told them that the argument between his parents had quickly become heated while adding that at the time his mother was backing his father when Edward Sukhu suddenly threw the stove on her.

He said that the kerosene in the stove spilled onto the woman’s hair and clothing which resulted in a fire quickly spreading and he doused his mother with water. He suffered minor burns after trying to help his mother.

He noted that as his father tried to escape, he fell and hit his head and became unconscious. An alarm was then raised and neighbours assisted the younger Sukhu in rushing both of his parents to the Skeldon Public Hospital.

It was said that Harripaul sustained burns to her back, both ears, and the right side of her face while her son was treated for minor burns on his right hand, arm, abdomen and leg.
