The 29-year-old security guard who was on Thursday nabbed by police ranks at Plaisance on the East Coast of Demerara with an illegal Taurus pistol and matching rounds of ammunition was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the offence along with an unlawful wounding charge.

Meckiel Sancho, of Britton Street, Plaisance, made his appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alisha George who read the two summary charges and one indictable charge to him.

The charges states that on March 9 at Victoria Road, Plaisance, Sancho had in his possession a .32 Taurus pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence. It was also stated that he had 12 matching rounds of .32 ammunition.

In addition, Sancho was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding a character known to the police, Rawle Franklin, during a recent incident. Franklin  is also from Plaisance.

Bail was refused for the defendant and he was remanded to prison until April 25 when the matter is expected to be called again.

In a release, the police had stated that their ranks were carrying out a ‘cordon and search’ exercise between 5.30 am and 7 am on Thursday when they saw the accused riding a black bicycle heading south on Victoria Road, Plaisance. They then proceeded to stop and search him.

During the search the ranks discovered the .32 semi-automatic Taurus pistol along with a magazine containing 12 matching rounds, in the waist of his pants.

He was then informed of the crime allegedly committed, cautioned, arrested, and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station along with the two items which were lodged.
