There was an implicit attempt at conversion to Christianity at J.B. Cropper C.M. School

Dear Editor,

I am writing in relation to the debate (Stabroek News March 9, 2023) between Harry Hergash and Dr. Bhagwan on the role of the Canadian Mission in Christianizing education in Guyana schools. There were several references to Cropper Elementary School located at Albion Front, by both Mr. Hergash and Dr. Bhagwan. Editor, I attended J.B. Cropper C.M. school, now renamed Cropper Government School, in the 1950’s and early 60’s. I recall, with vivid clarity, that we were required to say the ‘Our Father’ prayer, as the very first activity to begin the day. We were also frequently, read Bible stories and encouraged to attend Sunday school. At no time Hinduism and Islam were discussed.  While I am grateful for the schooling Canadian Mission provided, there was, I believe, an implicit attempt at conversion to Christianity.

Sincerely,

Ganesh Harilal
