Insurance rates increases for properties

Dear Editor,

I read in your March 15 edition that insurance rates for properties will increase on April 1st.  The reason being given were settlements for different hurricanes and storms in the Caribbean area have cost the reinsurers billions of US dollars. First Guyana, as we all know, is in South America and not susceptible to the types of storms and hurricanes that would cause such damages.  I’m requesting a breakdown of settlement costs by country over the past decade.  It’s more than likely Guyana would be at the bottom of that list. Second, who/where are our advocates who are responsible for ensuring that the insurance carriers give Guyanese fair rates? Not all of us are swimming in oil.

Sincerely,

R.K. Singh
