GOA’s EGM scheduled for today

After last Tuesday’s false start, the nominees in the race for the leadership and the executive positions of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) are back in the blocks today.

The highly anticipated Electoral General Meeting (EGM) of the one of the most important institutions locally starts at 17:00hrs at Olympic House.

The EGM was initially scheduled to take place seven days ago but was postponed after a motion was moved by Vice President (VP) nominee, Cristy Campbell.

Campbell, the President of the Guyana Tennis Association, moved the motion which was seconded by fellow VP nominee, and head of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, to ensure that “there is no issue clouding over the holding of the meeting.”

The EGM came under the microscope after the validity of a correspondence dated March 7 stating which constituent members were eligible and ineligible to be a part of the Meeting was brought into question.

The letter was purported to be written and signed by Secretary General of the body, Hector Edwards.

Edwards however later denied being its author or authorizing anyone to sign on his behalf.

The issue had been a matter of contention and was the proverbial ‘Elephant in the room’ at the meeting last week.

The EGM was subsequently pushed back to ensure that there is no issue clouding over the holding of the meeting.

Today, the eligible constituent members will decide in large part the direction sports will undertake for next two years by casting their votes to select the new executive.

According to the GOA’s constitution, each constituent member is entitled to send not more than three (3) delegates of which two (2) shall be entitled to vote.

In an official correspondence seen by this publication, the Meeting’s Agenda will consist of the following:
