Emphasize the importance of being respectful to others’ beliefs and practices

Dear Editor,

Ramadan commences on the 23rd of March, 2023 and I would like to wish the Muslim Community a heart-felt Eid Mubarak. I am urging non-Muslims to continue to be respectful as there would be fasting involved on this beautiful observation.

The reason I am writing this letter, is for adults to educate children about the importance of Ramadan and how they should react to their fellow brothers and sisters when they’re devoting themselves to their faith and to Allah by fasting. Personally I’ve seen children try to tempt their peers into eating as well as taking it to the extra mile by teasing them.

This is a common practice in the adult world, only as adults we are able to handle the jokes as compared to a child. Nevertheless if there is discomfort kindly refrain from it. Children are innocent, let us teach them what is right at a young age.

I respectfully request for the Ministry of Education to engage in conversations with the youths through programs or have a public notice, to emphasize the importance of being respectful with another’s belief and practices. Let us encourage our youths to embrace diversity.

Sincerely,

Saaya Prasad
