A Beehive family of four lost their home on Wednesday evening in a fire that also damaged the walls of two nearby houses before it was successfully controlled.

A Guyana Fire Service press release said a call was received at 19:02 hrs on Wednesday and water tender 106 and a crew from the Melanie Fire Station responded to find a two-storey wooden and concrete building engulfed in flames.

The release further stated that the fire started after naked flames from an unknown source ruptured an LPG gas line, which caused the gas cylinder to explode and spread to nearby combustible materials. The building and its contents were destroyed, leaving four people homeless, the GFS said.

Two houses situated on the southern side of the building were affected by radiated heat, resulting in two walls and a quantity of PVC guttering being slightly damaged, the release said.

The owner of the house was said to be Shawn Madramootoo, who lived at the Lot 325 Beehive north, East Coast Demerara with his family.
