A New Amsterdam, Berbice man was on Saturday busted with 54.790 kilograms of cannabis during an anti-crime patrol by ranks from the Mahaica Police Station.

A police report stated that the incident occurred at about 9.30 am in the vicinity of Helena No. 1, Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. A white motor canter bearing registration #GYY 8519 was moving at a fast rate west. Police stopped the vehicle. There were three occupants: the driver, a female and a toddler.

Police say the driver was asked to produce his documents which he failed to do. The man however handed over a firearm and the firearm licence. He was escorted to the Mahaica Police Station where it was observed that the vehicle had hollow blocks, sand and a wheel barrow in the back of the tray. A search was conducted under the sand and unearthed two bulky brown salt bags and two transparent parcels suspected to be cannabis.

The adults were told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested. The narcotics were weighed in their presence and amounted to 54.790 kilograms. The firearm was lodged.
