Accused chain snatcher granted bail

A man accused of snatching a one pennyweight gold chain from a woman on King Street was granted $80,000 bail after he appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly yesterday.

Odingo Smith appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of larceny. It is alleged that on 14th June, at King Street, Georgetown, he stole from the person of Allana Kissoon a gold chain valued at $65,000.

According to the Prosecution, on Wednesday 14th June, the complainant was walking on King Street, Georgetown when she saw the defendant running towards her. When he got close the accused pulled the chain from the VC’s neck and escaped in a southern direction on King Street. The VC raised an alarm and persons who were in the area gave chase.

 The accused was later apprehended by public-spirited persons and was taken to the Brickdam Police Station.

Smith was then told of the allegation, cautioned and taken into police custody. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $80,000. The matter was adjourned to the 21st July, 2023.
