Inmates of the Mazaruni Prison on Saturday harvested more than 500 kg of produce from what they had planted on the prison farm. Agriculture is one of the main rehabilitation programmes being offered by the Guyana Prison Services (GPS).

Among the produce harvested were a total of 245 pounds of boulanger (eggplant) and a large quantity of carambola (five-finger), a press release said.

Farming is commonly practiced by inmates at the New Amsterdam, Mazaruni, Lusignan, and Timehri penitentiaries. This agricultural activity is geared at sustainably supplying the prisons’ populations with produce and poultry supplies.

According to Director of Prisons Nick Elliot, the carambola will be preserved for the upcoming Christmas holidays. Elliot noted that farming for the first half of this year was very productive, the release said.
