Chase-Green, Mentore returning to city council

The next Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Georgetown are to be elected tomorrow and former mayor Pat Chase-Green and deputy mayor Alfred Mentore are returning to the council.

Notice of the election was sent out by the Town Clerk, Candace Nelson inviting those elected and selected to serve on the council following the June 12th Local Government Elections.

It was explained that the meeting falls under section 12(1) of the Municipality and District Councils Act.

The meeting is set to be held at the Kitty Market Conference Room at 10 am. The traditional venue, City Hall is undergoing major repairs.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has 19 seats on the council and the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic has 11.

The council comprises 15 persons who won First-Past-the-Post election in their respective constituencies and 15 persons extracted from the proportional representation lists.

Interest will be high around the election of the mayor and deputy. It is being suggested that APNU will opt for Kibwe Komota Copeland as the new mayor although the former Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority, Lelon Saul could be a possible candidate. Copeland won the South Ruimveldt constituency easily. Chase-Green switched from APNU to the PPP/C for this election and only appeared on the proportional representation list for the PPP/C. Mentore narrowly lost his fight for constituency four and is returning to the council as a member of the APNU proportional representation list.
