Men plead guilty to aggravated robbery on Water St

Twenty-five-year-old Orlando Scott of Cummings Park, Sophia, Georgetown, and Chris McKenzie, 24, of Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where they both pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery.

It was stated that on Friday, June 23, at Water Street, Georgetown, the two men robbed Dyanand Singh of one Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued $55,000 and $75,000 cash.

On the day in question, Singh was walking along Water Street, Georgetown, in the company of his girlfriend when both the accused approached him from behind, choked him and relieved him of the items. The robbers then escaped using a motorcycle which was parked nearby.

Investigators managed to extract footage from closed circuit television cameras in the area and were able to identify the suspects. The defendants were eventually spotted in the Stabroek Market area and were arrested and taken into police custody.

Both the defendants pleaded guilty to the charge that was read by Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs- Marcus.

When asked by the magistrate their reasons for committing the crime, Scott replied by saying “We did commit the crime, and would like to ask for the court’s leniency because I was frustrated because I am not getting no work.” Meanwhile McKenzie responded, “Asking for forgiveness and I would never do it again.”

The court also heard that Scott was charged twice for armed robbery and had compensated the victims in both cases.

The police prosecutor strongly objected to bail based on the prevalence of the offence and as such bail was refused.

The duo are expected to make their next court appearance on July 26.
