Twenty-two-old Shaggy Mohamed (address not stated) appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the charge of wounding.

It is alleged that on Saturday July 1 at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm upon Ragland Pollard. Mohamed pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that Mohamed and Pollard are known to each other. According to the complainant on July 1, at about 18.00 hours, he was sitting at his neighbour’s shop drinking. While there, the neighbour was explaining that due to faulty cement work that Mohamed’s father did, her yard flooded. The accused was standing in the yard when he overheard the conversation. He shouted at Pollard to mind his own business before arming himself with a piece of wood measuring about four feet in length. The accused then approached the complainant and struck him on his right hand, which caused Pollard  to fall to the ground. The accused then grabbed the complainant by the hand and began to drag him around the neighbourhood.

Persons began to video the incident which was later uploaded to social media. Pollard was picked up in a semi-conscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated and sent away. He is currently suffering from a broken hand and will have to return soon for further medical treatment. Mohamed was contacted, told of the allegation, and arrested.

At court, the police prosecutor objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence, and the magistrate refused it.

Mohamed is expected to make his next court appearance on September 6 for statements.
