Unidentified miner dies after struck by tree limb

Police in Regional Division #1 are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified Amerindian man on Monday at 42 Miles Backdam, Region One.

Enquires revealed that the man was employed with a dredging operation owned by Diane David, a 33 year-old businesswoman who resides at Falls Top, Region One who was establishing a mining operation at 42 Miles backdam.

According to an employee, Dwayne Fredericks, at about 08:30 hours Monday morning, he and his co-worker were clearing the area to set up a camp when a limb from a tree broke off, hitting his co-worker in his chest.

Fredericks related that he immediately sought assistance from the dredge owner, who placed the man in a car and escorted him to Port Kaituma District Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

The police were informed and detectives who examined the deceased’s body observed abrasions to the chest area. The body was photographed and placed in the Port Kaituma District Hospital’s Mortuary for identification and for a post-mortem examination to be conducted at a later date.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
