A pregnant woman and her family are in despair following a fire which completely gutted their recently renovated home at 21 Poker Street, Wismar, Linden, last week Tuesday.

Lovern Jacks, the sister of the home owner, explained to Stabroek News in an interview this week  that her sister resides in the United States, however, the woman’s children, one-year-old grandson and daughter in law who is currently six months pregnant, resided at the home.

According to Jacks, no one was home at the time of the incident since the daughter-in-law was experiencing labour pains and was at the hospital. She recounted that at around 12.00 midnight, she received a call from her neighbour telling her that the house was up in flames.

She said they rushed to the scene, but upon arrival, everything was already damaged and burnt.

“My neighbour called the fire service and then called us, but when we got here everything was already burnt up. We lost television, freezer, and fridge, microwave and including all the baby clothes that was bought”, she lamented.

The family is currently seeking shelter at a relative as they contemplate their next move after losing close to $2 million in items at the home. Jacks also indicated that they did a bit of selling at the house and the fire resulted in a great loss.

The origin of the fire is said to be strange, however the sister reported that the fire was suspected to be an act of arson by someone who is well known to the family. She further stated that the person entered the house through the bedroom window which they came back and met open during the fire. However, the suspect is on the run and has not yet been apprehended.
