Thirty-year-old Travis Walton, (address not stated), appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday  before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus to answer to an assault charge that was read to him.

It is alleged that on 13th May, at Georgetown, the defendant unlawfully assaulted Yolanda Collington, his neighbour, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

The court heard that the defendant’s first court date was the 31st of May, but he did not appear. He was asked by Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus why he did not appear and he responded by saying “The number that I gave the police is my mother’s number, but the same day I had to go up to Berbice to do construction work and I didn’t have no contact.”

The court prosecutor had no objections to bail but requested for bail to be granted in a substantial amount since an arrest warrant was out for the accused.

The defendant was also placed on a bond until the conclusion of the matter in default of which there would be two weeks of imprisonment

Bail was granted in the sum of $50,000.

He is expected to make his next court appearance on 2nd August.
