The National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue was a hive of sporting activity yesterday as the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) did its part in observing Olympic Day 2023.

Olympic Day is celebrated annually around the world from June 23.

The first annual Olympic Day was held on June 23, 1948 with nine National Olympic Committees (NOCs) hosting events on the anniversary of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) creation in 1894.

Seventy-five years later, along with Guyana, there are 130 NOCs across five continents marking the occasion with around five million people expected to take part.

This worldwide celebration of the Olympic spirit sees millions embrace the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect through the Olympic day theme of #LetsMove.

Yesterday, there was a cycle road race from the Gymnasium to Belfield and back which was won by star rider, Briton John.

Prior to that, there was a walk/jog/run event which was highlighted by standout athletes, Marlon Nicholson and Attoya Harvey who earned the top honours.

There were also demonstrations in the disciplines of archery, weightlifting, powerlifting, volleyball, boxing, squash, table tennis, badminton, hockey, tennis and hockey.
