Fire Chief, Gregory Wickham says the fire that swept through a section of the Charity Market in Region Two, three weeks ago, destroying twenty-nine stalls and injuring three firefighters, was electrical in origin.

Eleven other stalls suffered water damage as a result of firefighting.

Wickham yesterday told Stabroek News that the investigation launched by the Guyana Police Force, Fire Prevention Officers, and the Government Electrical Inspectorate, has been completed and it has been determined that the fire was electrical in origin.

On July 6 at about 19.15 hours, a fire erupted at the centre of the market. The Guyana Fire Service received a call at about 19.20 hours and responded with two tenders from the Anna Regina Station.

The market is a one-flat wooden and concrete structure housing 83 stalls, and is the property of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council.

The firefighters arrived at the scene and opened the market, which was secured with padlocks, using the keys that were lodged at the station. Meanwhile, security guards, police ranks and residents formed a bucket brigade in an attempt to extinguish the fire but their efforts failed.

The GPF managed to contain the blaze to the central portion of the market with about 40 per cent of the building sustaining damage.

Two firemen, Springer and Tribuwan, were injured as a result of electric shock while another identified as Ramadhin, was injured after an object fell on his head. They were all taken to the Suddie Public Hospital for medical attention.
