Cyclist dies in Broad St accident

The Police say they are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on  Thursday at about 7.30 pm on Broad Street and which claimed the life of a cyclist.

The accident involved motor car #PAC 4964, owned and driven at the time by Leando Retimiah, a 31-year-old from Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and pedal cyclist Michael McKenzie (now-deceased), a 33-year-old of Lot 29 Meadow Bank Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding west on the southern drive lane of Broad Street, in the vicinity of High Street, at a fast rate while the cyclist was proceeding east on the southern drive lane of Broad Street.

Retimiah told investigators he was driving between 60-70 kmph when he observed a cyclist proceeding east along the southern side of Broad Street. He said that when he saw the pedal cyclist, he applied brakes and swerved further south to avoid a collision, but the right side front of his motor car collided with the pedal cyclist.

As a result of the collision, the cyclist was flung into the air, landed on the windscreen of the car and fell onto the road where he sustained injuries about his body.  He was picked up in an unconscious condition by Retimiah and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
