Overseas-based nurse, businessman robbed in Berbice attacks

Last week an overseas-based Guyanese nurse who is visiting her residence in Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice and a Corentyne businessman were robbed of a large amount of cash in separate attacks at their respective homes.

On Friday around 9 pm, Paulette Holder, 58, a nurse by profession of New Jersey was robbed at her Edinburgh Public Road home by two males dressed in dark-coloured clothing and armed with a handgun and knife. One bandit wore a mask while the other did not.

Holder who has lived in New Jersey for over twenty years, explained that she arrived in Guyana on Thursday morning. “I usually come home and every year I do a little thanksgiving, invite the kids and I usually bring like gifts to give them”, she said.

On Friday evening while her nieces were packing gift bags for the children she was preparing to head out to meet up with some of her old nurse friends when the men invaded her premises.

She said that she was getting dressed in her bedroom when she saw the masked bandit who pointed the handgun at her forehead and demanded that she hand over “all the money that you come with.”

It is suspected that the men gained entry through the backdoor, half of which was open at the time.

She said she had cash, a pair of earrings worth $140,000, and a gold chain that was gifted to her by her mother on her dresser, all of which the man grabbed as he then proceeded to ask her “Where is the US currency?”

The bandit grabbed $275,000 which she had.

The woman said she started to scream but the bandit cursed at her telling her to stop. “When my nieces came out the middle room they came face to face with the second person that was in the house and that other individual wasn’t armed with anything”, she said.

After the bandit ran out of her room, he scuffled with one of her nieces after which both escaped on foot.

Meanwhile, on Thursday around 5. 45 pm, Makarran Singh, 44, a businessman of Lot 6 Belvedere North, Corentyne was robbed of $5.5m.

Based on the information gathered, two males, one armed with a handgun and the other wearing a full-face helmet attacked the businessman who had just arrived at his home in motor canter GAC 1261 with the cash in a bag on the passenger seat.

Upon arriving home, the two bandits approached the man’s vehicle on a red and white XR motorcycle and pounced on him, pointing the firearm and demanding the bag.

After the man handed over the bag containing the money, the bandits fled through a nearby street.
