BVI trade delegation looking at investment opportunities

In light of Guyana’s rapid economic growth, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has embarked on a trade mission, which is geared at strengthening ties between the BVI & Guyana.

Chief Executive Officer of British Virgin Islands Finance, Elise Donovan yesterday related to Stabroek News that the trade mission represents the shared dedication to regional cooperation and economic development.

A 17-member delegation led by Deputy Premier of BVI and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade, Lorna Smith is currently in Guyana.  According to Donovan, the trade mission is expected to cover an array of sectors such as agriculture, finance, and business.

“We have seen what is happening in Guyana, as the fastest growing economy in the world and there are a lot of investment opportunities”, she was quoted as saying.

On Wednesday afternoon, BVI Finance met with the British Chamber of Commerce of Guyana at the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown, where discussions were held on how both countries could bolster trade relations and moreso play an integral part in the oil and non-oil sectors.

Executive Member of the British Chamber of Commerce of Guyana & CEO of Guysons Oil & Gas, Faizal Khan, in a brief interview with Stabroek News noted that these discussions were fruitful.

Although Khan did not give details about the content of these discussions, he is positive that the BVI would be able to greatly assist Guyana in its oil and non- oil sectors.

A release on July 31 from Prime Minister Mark Phillips’ office said that he met with a BVI delegation which consisted of Dr Karl Dawson, Junior Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Petrona Davies, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development. They briefed the Prime Minister on the various financial services provided by the BVI, the advantages of utilizing BVI corporate structures, and the BVI’s proficiency in facilitating international cross-border business.

The release said that several other topics of mutual interest were explored, such as the BVI’s and Guyana’s shared commitment to regional cooperation, economic development, and agricultural ties between the two countries.
