A 31-year-old inmate of the Berbice prison who is currently serving a 41-month prison sentence, escaped from ‘gang duty’ on Friday after stating that he wished to defecate.

The prisoner, Suraj Singh, known as ‘Shonta Singh’, from Number 72 Village, Corentyne, Ber-bice was convicted of Possession of Narcotics for Trafficking in May and was sentenced to 41 months in prison.

The report stated that at about 08.30 hours on Friday, a Prison Officer of the Guyana Prison Service headed out on duty with five prisoners who were convicted of various offences, to have the land cleaned at 40 Glasgow Public Road, East Bank Berbice.

At about 11.00 hours, Singh said he wanted to defecate and left the group to go towards a clump of bushes nearby when he suddenly scaled the northern fence and began to run.

An alarm was raised, but Singh escaped by heading further north into the bushes.

A joint operation has been launched in an effort to recapture the convicted prisoner.
