Flashback! A scene from the previous quarter-final section in the Digicel Schools Football Championship between Waramuri and Santa Rosa

Carmel will battle DC Caesar Fox from 17:00hrs, and St. Ignatius will engage Waramuri at 19:00hrs in the semi-final round of the Digicel Schools Football Championships this evening at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue,

The winning teams will clash in the championship match on Sunday. Carmel, the only remaining team from Georgetown and the coastal plain, secured their place in the final four-section after defeating fierce rival Dolphin Secondary 3-1. Carmel also bested Berbice Educational Trust and Kato in the earlier rounds of the national championships. Statistically, Carmel has recorded nine goals while conceding three while DC Caesar Fox is an offensive juggernaut, which was highlighted by their 5-0 quarterfinal victory over Charlestown.

The Region #7 champs also recorded wins against West Demerara and Mahaicony Technical Institute which equates to a total of 26 goals scored. Defensively, DC Caesar Fox is equally imposing, as they have only conceded once. Meanwhile, a hinterland derby will highlight the second semi-final encounter between Region #1’s Waramuri and Region #9’s St. Ignatius.

Labelled the dark horse following their unexpected performance, Waramuri eliminated Region #1 winner Santa Rosa 2-1 in the previous round. To date, they have recorded 11 goals while only allowing two concessions, which resulted in wins against Kwakwani and Vryman’s Erven. On the other side, St. Ignatius brushed aside Tucville 5-1 to seal their place in the semi-final round. The lopsided contest illustrated the offensive potency of the Region #9 champions, who have tallied a combined 21 goals during their campaign in the national championship. This attacking quality secured wins against Buxton and President’s College. On the defensive end, St. Ignatius has allowed three conversions.

Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of the tournament coordinating group, the Petra Organization, said, “I think it will be the best semifinals we have seen in a long time at the school level. It’s very hard to call. All four teams will give a good account of themselves so the matches will be very good. Maybe the best team win tomorrow.”
