A taxi driver is now to repay a woman US$800 after he was entrusted by her to contact a lawyer to process bail for her son, Keifer Downer.

Desmond Cummings, 43, of Lot 200 Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Court Two on 11th August. He pleaded guilty to the charge that on 10th December, 2022, at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Onika Albert with the sum of US$800, to contact a lawyer to process bail for her son, he fraudulently misappropriated same.

According to his lawyer, Cummings received the money from the VC’s son and not from the VC.

The VC told the court that her son was nowhere around at the time she gave the defendant the money, for he was in jail. “I sent the money myself straight to that man”, she said.

The prosecutor had no objections to bail but requested reporting conditions.

The defendant was ordered by Magistrate Daly to repay the VC the money in two parts. He is expected to pay half on the 11th August at the Magistrate’s Court and the balance on or before 8th September at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. If in default he will be sentenced to serve nine months imprisonment.
