Three children die after boat capsizes in Rupununi -police

 Three children died after a boat capsized in Region 9 early Saturday morning, the police said.

Police sources identified the three dead children as Linda Joseph, 12, a student of Aishalton Secondary school and who resided at Karaudanawa Village, South Rupununi; and Norsha Ayaw, 3, and Newton Ayaw, 11 months old, who both resided at Masakenari Village in the Deep South Rupununi.

According to police sources, the deaths occurred at Piri Piri Area in the Essequibo River.

Region 9 Police Commander Raphael Rose told Stabroek News yesterday that at about 3 am Saturday, a boat departed Parabara Village with cement, four drums of gasoline and 12 passengers including the children and their parents.

The boat later capsized and the adults swam to shore while the children drowned. The bodies were recovered later on Saturday morning. They were brought to shore at Masakenari and buried yesterday.

Investigations are ongoing.
