Man sentenced to two years over unlicensed firearm at Baramita

Romel Alonzo, 22, (address not stated), appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Delon Bess where he was sentenced to two years in prison after being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The court heard that on August 1st, Alonzo had threatened a 38-year-old shopkeeper of Baramita, North West District, for which he was subsequently arrested. The man was taken to the Baramita Police Station where he reportedly informed detectives of the location of the firearm. Alonzo accompanied by police ranks went to a bushy area at Barama Line where he pointed out a small black bulky plastic bag that was on the ground among some nearby bushes. When opened, the bag was found to contain a .32 Taurus pistol without a magazine.

Alonzo was told of the offence committed, cautioned, and escorted to the station along with the firearm.
