Animal theft in our villages has been an ongoing activity for a long time

Dear Editor,

I must congratulate the staff of Stabroek News for the remarkable work they are doing in terms of news output. Kindly permit your good office to publish this most urgent letter. On Sunday July 30th at 4:10 pm a silver-grey car bearing Number Plate PTT 4778, driven by an Indian man, wearing spectacles, seems in his mid-40’s, drove off in full speed on the Non Pariel road, from the east, from the white bridge – (from the mini market side), heading west to another bridge, without rails, that leads to the main road in Coldingen.

As car PTT 4778 approached a herd of (15) grazing sheep, the driver slowed down near to a ram, opened his front door and grabbed it into his front seat and sped off with the ram as a front seat passenger while forcing it down. We saw it and the boys also started running towards the car but he sped off and turned onto the bridge without rails onto the main Coldingen road and escaped. This is the fourth ram that he pulled into his car. He did so in February, May, June and now July, not forgetting rams from other people/cattle farmers.

A ram is worth between $40,000.00 to $ 60,000.00, about 40-50 lbs or more and this is not the first time that this man has done this. Only last week, he drove aback of us at the airstrip road and grabbed another ram. He did so a few weeks ago in the Non Pareil area and grabbed another sheep. And this has been an ongoing activity for a long time, and it seems without end. Poor people are rearing their animals including sheep, cows, etc., and this person has been making good with their animals. Of course, complaints were lodged at the Vigilance Police Station, several times. Up to yesterday afternoon, July 31st, another report was lodged and yet still the individual keeps coming around. Officers at Vigilance said that they have to check GRA for further details/info.

Whenever he grabs a sheep/ram, he would drive off at high speed and anyone in the way is likely to be knocked over and that is why people are afraid. He keeps coming around every week around  Enterprise, Non Pareil – Coldingen – Airstrip road between 3:30 – 4:00 pm, which is when the sheep are returning to their home. Whenever he does not see the animals, he lurks around the old road, next to the bridge without rails pondering over his next move, drive up the road facing east, look around for sheep by the culvert and then turn around and speed off on to Coldingen main road. This is a daily activity.

It is made to understand that he is from somewhere between Mon Repos and Good Hope areas, sometimes he comes in different vehicles with other sheep thieves directed by him. They are seen with our naked eyes when they grab these sheep and speed off. For how long would we continue to lose our poor animals? We have to buy feed, grass and perform manual labour in the rain and sun to upkeep our animals whilst this person is feasting on them free of cost. I must state that the residents are now prepared to take responsibility because he is now known.

We, the residents are calling on the relevant authorities at Vigilance Police Station to assist in capturing this predator on the East Coast Corridor of Enterprise, Non Pareil, Coldingen, and Airstrip Road and to take the necessary actions.

Sincerely,

Residents:
