UG says to strengthen management of sports programmes

The University of Guyana (UG) says  that it has taken a number of steps to strengthen the management of sports programmes at the university, a release from the institution stated on Saturday.

These, it added, have been initiated by a task force on sports through the office of the Vice-Chancellor and follows a report two weeks ago, into improper action by a member of staff at a recent international sports meet.

“While the official enquiry into the incident is still being completed, a series of important steps have already been taken aimed at strengthening the university’s governance and ethical systems in regard to sports management. These include creation of a draft Code of Ethics for Clubs and Officials and a draft Selection Policy for sports. These new policies are expected to be sent for comments, review and finalisation within the next six weeks. The university is being supported by national and international sporting bodies in this regard.”

According to the release, the report on the disciplinary matter is also expected to be concluded during this period since preparations for the new academic year beginning September 4, as well as the extensive nature of the incident review, have required more time than previously expected.

The university assured that it is committed to “closing gaps and creating comprehensive conditions” for fair review and responsible redress of these matters, the release added.

Following reports of alleged nepotism in the selection of its athletics team for the FISU University Games in China, UG in a release on August 10th said it had commenced reviewing the selection process.

According to that release, the University’s Vice Chancellor had declared that sweeping reforms will be the likely outcome of the investigation. The Office of the VC, it noted, was prompt in its response to allegations by launching an internal investigation.

“The investigation is focusing on any breaches in the regulations, ethical guidelines, selection protocols, and disclosure expectations of the University…” the release said.

Further, the release said that the University is deeply disturbed by the questions raised surrounding the selected team members.

“The University holds itself to very high standards and has been deeply concerned by reports about this matter. All efforts are being taken to verify, understand and responsibly address the matter”, it said.
