The search for a 13-year-old student of the Mackenzie High School, Hassini Mack, who is believed to have drowned at the Coomacka Mines beach, Region Ten, on Tuesday afternoon is still ongoing.

Mack, who resided at Wisroc New Housing Scheme, Linden is believed to have drowned at the beach when he and another teen went to wash off by the riverside after playing in the water with others.

Family members assisted by divers have been searching for the teen but he is still to be found.

Investigations revealed that around 14:00 hours on the day in question, Mack left his home in the company of a 29-year-old Canadian national, his 25-year-old wife (an American national), both of Kara Kara, Mackenzie, Linden, along with four other juveniles, to go swimming at the Coomacka Mines beach.

At the beach, Mack, the four other children, and the Canadian, went into the water where they were playing some games. However, at about 16.30 hours, Mack and one of the other juveniles, a 14-year-old from Wismar, went to wash off by the river side. As they began to walk towards the centre of the river, the water started to flow at a fast rate causing Mack to sink.

As they began to shout for help, the Canadian ran to their assistance and managed to rescue the 14-year-old. The man attempted to rescue Mack but by that time he had sunk and disappeared.

With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, the man tried to find the boy but the search proved futile.

According to the teen’s mother, Cerenze Mack, she doesn’t know exactly what had happened on Tuesday because she wasn’t there but disclosed that for years the Imam of the mosque would always take kids camping or tutor children. So, Tuesday was no different when he, his wife and the children went swimming. She noted that the police were searching for her son, but so far were unsuccessful. The woman informed that she managed to get some private divers to search for her son’s body, but they too were unsuccessful.

Investigations are ongoing.
