Better markings needed on East Coast roadway

Dear Editor,

Every week we bemoan the carnage on our roads and display pictures.  There are little steps that can be taken to reduce this weekly bloodletting.

How about painting medians and accompanying markings so that drivers have their lanes more defined.  This is helpful particularly at night.  Much of the East Coast roadway has no such markings.  In travelling from Georgetown to the upper reaches of the Corentyne, once one passes the four-lane stretch on the East Coast of Demerara, there is a conspicuous absence of such paintwork.  The Corentyne Highway is the same.  Instead of splurging on fountains, how about spending that money on painting medians and other essentials on our roadways so drivers will have some guidance in staying in their lanes.

While on the topic of roads, we can still do with a few more roundabouts.  The location at the Cuffy Monument is a prime location for one, with Brickdam, Homestretch Avenue, Vlissengen Road, Hadfield Street and North Road all pouring out vehicles in the same vicinity.  The long traffic light located at that junction is of little help with the red being so long that some drivers turn off their engines to conserve fuel.    It has become so bad that mini-buses coming from Homestretch Avenue have taken to turning left then making a U-turn to catch North Road.  A roundabout would put an end to that fiasco. The other end of Homestretch Avenue by the cultural centre can also do with a roundabout.  That clogged up artery by Little Diamond is another prime location for one.  These are little steps we can take to make our roads safer and to facilitate a smoother commute for the average person who lacks the advantage of carrying a wailing siren and flashing lights.

Yours truly,
Nathaniel Hinckson
