Poor treatment of injured teacher by No.64 Primary

Dear Editor,

Andrew Lewis, a teacher of New Market Primary in # 64 Village, and a CPCE student was on duty at 13:40 hours on Monday, September 11, 2023 when a careless driver hit him off his motorcycle at #64 Village. This resulted in a fractured foot. He is now a patient of New Amsterdam Hospital.

Andrew was sent by the Headteacher to a sports meeting at Skeldon Primary. He was not on ‘time off’ to conduct his own business. He was conducting the business of the Ministry of Education.

Since Monday there has been communication from the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force but absolutely none from the Ministry of Education. Is this the status quo of the Ministry of Education? Is there no empathy?

The major concern of the New Market Primary School Administration is for Andrew to send his medical and the key to the cupboard. If the staff of New Market Primary treats their colleague in this way, I am interested to know how they treat the people’s children.

Questions for the Minister of Education

1. Why is it that the last teacher to join the staff, a TQM, has to be the Sports Master when there are seasoned senior teachers at New Market Primary?

2. What systems are in place to address issues of such nature? This is quite worrying.

Yours faithfully,
