The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) yesterday handed out monetary incentives to those responsible for Guyana winning last month’s Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors boxing tournament held at the National Gymnasium and also those who won medals at this year’s AMBC championships.

The presentation was held at the Mirage Banquet Hall Third and Albert Street, Alberttown.

“The main reason for holding this briefing is because of the fact that our association thought it fit to recognize the contributions that were made during the last Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament. It would have been the fifth time that we retained the title and the sixth time that we have won that title,” Ninvalle explained.

“In the life of that competition, we’ve won every single tournament,” said the GBA president, adding…”For me I think that is something commendable but that did not happen without the efforts of several persons, the referees and judges commission, the coaches commission, the boxers and the members of the executive.”

Ninvalle said as a result, the GBA executive thought it fit to hold the simple but significant ceremony to say thank you to those persons.

In addition, Ninvalle said that the year 2023 was a good one for the GBA on the international scene as both Desmond Amsterdam and Keevin Allicock won medals at the prestigious AMBC championships which qualified them to attend the upcoming Pan American Games next month in Santiago, Chile.

Ninvalle said that there has been a gradual progression with respect to the sport adding that he was quite happy with the fact that shortly after the completion of the annual Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament the GBA was able to stage its U16 boxing championships.

“So I’m heartened by what I’m seeing and I’m glad to say that we have a special crop of young boxers coming on board,” he declared.

Also making brief remarks were Coaches Seibert Blake and Terrence Poole.

Among those receiving awards yesterday were Sebert Blake, Terrence Poole, Gregory Cort, Clifton Moore, Lennox Daniels, Tiquan Sampson, Akeela Vancooten, Keevin Allicock and Desmond Amsterdam.

At the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors tournament Guyana’s Tiquan Sampson was adjudged the most outstanding junior boxer and Akeela Vancooten, the female best boxer.

Guyana lifted the Winfield Braithwaite trophy after ending with 11 gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals.
