A 21-year-old labourer of Lot 121 Richmond Housing Scheme is now unable to work after he suffered severe injuries about his body inflicted by a group of men during a drinking spree at Henrietta, Region Two.

Haymant Deodat was attacked on September 18 at around 17.45 hours by his friends at a popular shop at Henrietta, Region Two. It was reported that he was drinking with a group of friends when an old issue came up.  This prompted two of the men from the group to break the beer bottles they were drinking from and begin stabbing the man about his body.

As a result, Deodat sustained severe injuries to the upper part of the body, arm, and head. He was immediately rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He spent four days in the Suddie Public Hospital.

The matter was reported to the Anna Regina Police station and three of the men were apprehended while two are still at large. The entire ordeal was recorded by a CCTV camera.

The trio, Ron Henry of Richmond, Lohan Persaud of Richmond, and Zamer Klass of La Bella Alliance, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court where they were charged with felonious wounding and placed on $250,000 bail each.

The charge states that on Monday, September 18, at Henrietta Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded  Deodat with intent to disfigure, disable, or to cause grievous bodily harm.

The men pleaded not guilty to the charge. Relatives of Deodat expressed dissatisfaction at the way the case was being dealt with. They were hoping that the trio would have been remanded for the crime.

Deodat is said to be the sole breadwinner of the family and was the friend of the men that attacked him. He is currently in a lot of pain and is still traumatised over the entire ordeal.
