Prime Minister Mark Phillips yesterday praised China for its “exceptional achievements and outstanding developments” over several decades.

Phillips made this statement at a reception held by the Chinese Embassy to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The reception was held at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre.

“Guyana congratulates China on its numerous achievements and remarkable journey over the last seven decades, demonstrating the futuristic vision of Chinese leaders and the tenacity and perseverance of the Chinese people. China is now a worldwide powerhouse playing a vital role on the global stage”, he said, according to a release from the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister said that Guyana can benefit from China’s development model in areas such as infrastructure investment, industrial promotion, support for manufacturing, education, and attracting foreign investments.

He also said that Chinese culture has become an integral part of Guyanese society.

“The last 170 years of the arrival of Chinese immigrants in Guyana have paved the way for the robust ties that currently exist, and we are truly appreciative of the contributions made by our Chinese brothers and sisters to our country’s development”, he said.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for opportunities created through relations with China.

“The cooperation programme between Guyana and China is firmly established in a number of areas, including infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and education. We are particularly appreciative of the assistance provided for developments in our health sector, especially during the pandemic. I want to especially recognise the invaluable contributions of the Chinese medical personnel”, stated.

Prime Minister Phillips emphasised Guyana’s commitment to expanding bilateral ties with China and working together towards a brighter future for both countries based on shared values and goals.

In addition, he raised the significance of sovereignty and territorial integrity in nation-building, reaffirming Guyana’s support for the One China policy and expressing hope that China will support Guyana’s efforts against Venezuela’s territorial claims.

“The maintenance of sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the heart of a nation’s existence and development. Likewise, Guyana hopes that it can rely on China to support its efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Venezuela’s claim to two-thirds of its territory”, the Prime Minister said.
