B/ce favoured to win Inter County competition

A Berbice side, led by former West Indies left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and boasting players of the calibre of Shimron Hetmyer, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd and young guns Kevin Sinclair and Kevlon Anderson will start as favaourites to win the Guyana Cricket Board’s Inter County limited overs competition which gets cracking this weekend.

The tournament, which gets underway Saturday at the Blairmont Community Development Centre ground with arch rivals Demerara and Berbice meeting in the opening match, will serve as preparation for the upcoming Regional Super50 Championship run by Cricket West Indies.

The Demerara side will be led by Tevin Imlach and will include West Indies opening batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of the legendary Guyanese Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Sherfane Rutherford.

The Demerara side also includes rising stars Matthew Nandu and Mavindra Dindyal, both capable batsmen of whom much is expected.

According to the GCB, a number of players from the previous West Indies Four-Day Championship and Caribbean Premier League will feature in the four-team event, which also contains Essequibo and the GCB XI.

“Following Saturday’s opening match, the second match of Round One will continue on October 1st with more intense cricket action as last year’s runner-up Essequibo takes on the GCB Select XI at GCC, Bourda. Round Two will be played on October 3, with Berbice facing GCB Select XI at Enmore while Demerara battles Essequibo at GCC. On  October 5, Berbice faces Essequibo at GCC in a rematch of last year’s final, while Demerara comes up against GCB Select XI at Enmore,” the release stated. The championship match will take place on October 7 at the Georgetown Cricket Club venue.
