The Hard Rock Café has apologised over a menu item titled “Blood Over the River.”

The description of this menu item angered patrons for making what was described as inappropriate references to slavery and the historic 1763 slave rebellion.

“Named after the 1763 rebellion in Guyana, indulge in the rich flavors of a succulent 10oz steak, perfectly grilled to your liking, cooked with a luscious blood-red wine reduction, priced at 10,700”, the description said on the international chain’s menu.

Members of the public raised their concerns on social media. In response, Hard Rock Café – based at MovieTowne – issued an apology and removed the offending item.

“Dear Valued Patrons,

We extend our sincere apologies for an oversight in our menu that included an item which offended the rich history of Guyana. We deeply regret any discomfort or offense this may have caused.

Immediate action has been taken to remove the item from our menu, ensuring that such oversights do not happen again in the future. We appreciate your understanding and the opportunity to learn from this experience.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to serving you with a menu that respects and celebrates the cultural diversity and heritage of Guyana.

Sincerely,

Hard Rock Cafe Guyana”

Stabroek News visited the establishment yesterday to speak with a representative regarding the origins of the item’s name. The manager was however unavailable.
