Be creative for CPL 2024

Dear Editor,

A recommendation for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and CPL Promoters for 2024, Sunday’s win was quite a momentous occasion for all Guyanese. Regardless of being a cricket fan, the majority would agree that the energy country-wide was thrilling, it truly felt like a Warrior Nation. However, there is a serious, emerging issue that needs to be addressed- the rise of rum drinking in national events. This is in no way an attack on individuals who wish to enjoy a drink or two but simply an opinion that deserves consideration.

While the view exists that there were some family oriented activities such as the food festivals and obviously the games, was this really enough? It is my view that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports should have capitalized on the “Warrior Nation” concept and promote activities to inspire youths and bring families together. The momentous win could have been celebrated by hosting a celebratory steel pan performance and a live band event on the newly renovated Band Stand, all heightened by well-deserved fireworks display and banner towing in the sky with the words “Warrior Nation”.

This event could be attended by the cricket teams providing fans a glimpse of their favourite players, trophies and medals. Likewise, replicate the event in Berbice to give other passionate fans a similar experience. I urge the Ministry and the CPL promoters to be creative in 2024 and plan events with youths and families in mind. The term “Carnival” has become too adulterated and in no way inspires youths to become ambassadors for Guyana.  Please do not let this sport be plagued by rum drinking and irrational behaviours which is slowing becoming the epitome of our society. Cricket Carnival should be left to the party promoters and for individuals wishing to have a drink or two, it in no way represents us as a Warrior Nation.

Sincerely,
