Ashmin Mahadeo continues to fight for her life at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being mysteriously shot in the neck on the morning of October 1st at her Williamsburg, Corentyne residence, and investigators in Berbice are yet to nab the person behind the gun.

Mahadeo, 30, of Lot 25 D Williamsburg, Corentyne, who was shot in the back of her neck resulting in the bullet exiting in the lower area of her jaw, is currently hospitalized in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Her relatives had said that doctors informed them that Mahadeo is currently paralyzed and will likely not be able to speak if she survives.

Police in Berbice had initially held Mahadeo’s fiancé, Neil Madramootoo, a Berbice engineer, for questioning. He has since been released on $300,000 bail.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October, 1st around 7:40 a.m., and according to information gathered, Mahadeo and her fiancé, who have been together for the last seven years were packing things in a vehicle that the fiancé was using as they had a bridal shower planned for the day.

The woman’s brother, Naresh Mahadeo, 32, who resides overseas but was visiting for the event, said that they were asleep in the house when they heard a loud explosion.

“When I came out my bed and I come by the door I see my sister lay down by the gate and blood coming through her mouth and I rushed and go out and my wife turn her over and I run out on the street and when I asked he (the fiancé) he said somebody shot her and he go in the house.”

Mahadeo’s wife, an overseas-based nurse, began doing CPR so as to assist the injured woman in breathing. According to the brother, after he did not see anyone on the street he also returned to offer assistance to his sister.

The brother who is seeking answers as to what transpired had said that after the explosion, Madramootoo ran into the house after everyone ran to Mahadeo’s assistance. “When I coming back from the street I see Neil coming out the house”, he said.

The relatives confirmed that investigators found a firearm in Mahadeo’s room in the ceiling. Police have said, that they are still awaiting the results of ballistic and gunpowder residue tests.

Additionally, the family said that at the hospital they questioned the fiancé as to where Mahadeo’s phone was, however, he said, “he don’t know where her phone is and where is his phone and I keep asking if somebody shoot her and if is a robbery her purse was outside and they didn’t take it.”

Furthermore, the brother pointed out that nearby CCTV footage showed no one passing through the street at the time of the shooting. “I keep asking he if he see anything and he seh it happen so fast he didn’t see anything… One time he seh he went by this gate then next time he seh he went by that gate outside so I seh you ain’t see nobody move, nobody run, nobody ride, anything? And he keep saying he ain’t see anything”, he said.

Haversack

According to a police source, both Mahadeo’s and her fiancé’s phones were located in a haversack allegedly belonging to the fiancé and are currently in the police’s possession.

Initially, the police had said that a file was sent for advice in the matter, however, Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus on Friday said that the file was returned and investigators had “some things to clear up.”

Asked whether police had to do further investigations, Bacchus said, “I never said that. I said we have some things to clear up.”

Meanwhile, on Monday when asked for an update on the matter, Bacchus said that the file was still in the region. However, when he was requested by reporters to be updated as to when the file would be sent back to the DPP for advice, as is usually done by commanders, Bacchus said, “DPP? I don’t know where the file destination will be…”
